Welcome to Jatindra Rajendra Mahavidyalaya

It was a long-cherished dream of the people of Amtala, in the Nowda block of Murshidabad District, West Bengal to have a general degree college in their locality. The dream turned into reality in 1986. Amtala High School (H.S.) of Amtala, Nowda, Murshidabad agreed to donate a piece of land (1.87 acre); materializing the dream and our college Jatindra Rajendra Mahavidyalaya (JRM) has thus been founded. It is a government-aided co-educational institution. Formerly the college was affiliated to the University of Calcutta now it is affiliated to the University of Kalyani. The college currently comprises 8 (Eight) departments, offering undergraduate programmes in Humanities and Social Sciences. The college was reaccredited with Grade “B” (3rd cycle) by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in December 2024.

Vision

The vision of JRM is laid down in its logo: Books → Lamps → Light; respectively signifying – Education, Enlightenment and Empowerment. The college is located in a rural and backward area where the majority of the population belongs to the Muslim community. There have long been several social problems thwarting the journey of especially the Muslim girls and overshadowing their future itineraries. The founding fathers of JRM have, therefore, a vision to impart quality education for building a strong foundation of the society by preparing the students, especially the girls’ students, for a world of quest, ambition and excellence.

Mission

The following mission statements aim at translating the visions of JRM into action plans:

  • To provide quality higher education to the students to enable them to face the challenges of the world with courage and confidence and mould them to be socially responsible citizens.
  • To transform the student into a balanced personality through a wide range of curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular activities.
  • To create culturally sensitive and inclusive environment for diversity and harmony.

Murshidabad is historically, geographically and culturally a fertile land situated on the bank of the river Ganga in West Bengal. Around the year 1986, the area of Nowda was a green isolated countryside with farming as the main occupation of the people. Rice, mustard and jute cultivation was the source of livelihood of the people of this area. The society was stratified, with education accessible only to the elite class of the village community. The education of the girls of the village was negligible. The population being largely Muslim, education was not encouraged among girls...
