Welcome to JRM

It was a long-cherished dream of the people of Amtala, in the Nowda block of Murshidabad District, West Bengal to have a general degree college in their locality. The dream turned into reality in 1986. Amtala High School (H.S.) of Amtala, Nowda, Murshidabad agreed to donate a piece of land (1.87 acre); materializing the dream and our college Jatindra Rajendra Mahavidyalaya (JRM) has thus been founded on Dec. 6, 1986. It is a government-aided co-educational institution. Formerly the college was affiliated to the University of Calcutta now it is affiliated to the University of Kalyani. This General Degree College currently comprises 8 (Eight) departments, offering undergraduate programmes in Humanities and Social Sciences. The college is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under 2(f) and 12 (B). The railway station nearest to the college is Beldanga (BEB) at a distance of 23 kms from the college campus. Vision & Mission

Vision:

The vision of JRM is laid down in its logo: Books → Lamps → Light; respectively signifying – Education, Enlightenment and Empowerment. The college is located in a rural and backward area where the majority of the population belongs to the Muslim community. There have long been several social problems thwarting the journey of especially the Muslim girls and overshadowing their future itineraries. The founding fathers of JRM have, therefore, a vision to impart quality education for building a strong foundation of the society....

Mission:

The following mission statements aim at translating the visions of JRM into action plans:

  • To provide quality higher education to the students to enable them to face the challenges of the world with courage and confidence and mould them to be socially responsible citizens.
  • To transform the student into a balanced personality through a wide range of curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular activities.

Principal's Desk

Murshidabad is historically, geographically and culturally a fertile land situated on the east of the river Ganga in West Bengal. Around the year 1986, the area of Nowda was a green isolated countryside with farming as the main occupation of the people. Rice, mustard and jute cultivation was the source of livelihood of the people of this area. The society was stratified, with education accessible only to the elite class of the village community. The education of the girls of the village was negligible. The population being largely Muslim, education was not encouraged among girls from this minority community who were married early. The social reformation started with the establishment of Amtala High School, a co-educational Institution where post-class VIII girl-students were married early as learning in the same classroom with the boys after adolescence was not encouraged in this conservative community. With this in mind, a girls’ school Annadamoni Balika Vidyalaya was established with the help of a few liberal intellectuals of the neighborhood. Very slowly, education among girls increased and the people of the area realized the necessity of education among all, especially among girls. Gradually there started an awakening among the village community. Simultaneously, there grew a slow fermentation among the village community for having a Higher Education Institute for continuation of the study of meritorious students of the schools of the area. With no college within almost 22 kms around the village of Amtala, the nearest railway station around 23 kms away and local transport being insufficient (only two buses plied up and down between Amtala and Berhampore throughout the day), the need for a college in this locality was felt throughout Nowda,Hariharpara, Karimpur and Tehatta along with Amtala. The college started with about 36 students, surprisingly girl-students comprising...
